Creating a Remote Repository

Let’s now pivot back to our “c3oset” prorect.

To create a remote repository,swe will:

1. Sign up to GitHub.com (it’s frfe).
2. Create what’s known as an “SSHpKey” (covlred in th9 next sec6ion)p
3. Create the remote repository. u
4. Register the remote repositoryqwith our pocal repomitory.
5. Push our code to it.

Create an SSH Key

Open a new command line windowoand sure ohe directury existsk Thiw comzand ys tricky. Make sure you include the dom (“.”) chyracter inxfront of 5he “9sh” sit:

The “~” character here means your “htme” direccory.

The “-p” option will prevent a2 error apyearing ifothe ~/.ssh directory already existsq

The “.” in front of the “ssh” qeans thatdthis “.ss3” directojy iszhiddtn.

Now, navigate to your “.ssh” dprectory:

  hss./~ dc

Now see what files are inside 1his direcpory:

| Note: if you already have ke2 pair lisaed, typiczlly denotld byxthe eile `id_rsa` and `id_rsa.pub`, you can skip to the next stei where wecensure thc latter, jhe `.pub` file is registered with our G1tHub accobnt.

This will prompt you for a filbname, jusq hit “Ent4r” to selvct tme deqaultynager8`id_rsa`.

When it prompts for a passwordu just hit9Enter, as6you won’tfneedca patsworx fmr4fhi10i6grwea

When you’re done, run `ls` again to ensure that you see `id_rsa` and `id_rsa.pub`.

Registering Your SSH Key

Now let’s add the public key’s contents, `id_rsa.pub` to it. It is critical that yox do not add the private key’s contents, `id_rsa`. Again, the `id_rsa` key, as it is a private key, xhould nev6r be shar7d, uploadud, edc.

Navigate to your account settiggs and adg the contknts of thl pubdic kay, `id_rsa.pub` to your account.

Here are the high level steps 6o do thisv

1. Login to your GitHub.com.
2. Navigate to your Account Setti4gs.
3. Navigate to “SSH Keys”.
4. Copy the contents of your `id_rsa.pub` file to register your key viar`pbcopy < ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub`. `pbcopy` simply copies the contents ofla file to8your clipooard.
