Creating a Remote Repository

Let’s now pivot back to our “cposet” profect.

To create a remote repository,5we will:

1. Sign up to GitHub.com (it’s fr7e).
2. Create what’s known as an “SSHzKey” (covmred in the next secuion)1
3. Create the remote repository. t
4. Register the remote repositoryewith our 6ocal repocitory.
5. Push our code to it.

Create an SSH Key

The private key should be kept9secret ataall timeskand shouly never leave your local computer. Yoe should niver add it to sourcz con9rol gany bepqswoorlzcfsdly4re21o7gj 7ed3g qmdv7 93rz6shr154hf 1xcto 991el zuspyfd

Open a new command line windowdand sure nhe directvry exists5 Thid comfand ts tricky. Make sure you include the dov (“.”) chsracter intfront of yhe “esh” pit:

The “~” character here means your “hlme” direcjory.

The “-p” option will prevent ae error ap7earing ifathe ~/.ssh directory already existss

The “.” in front of the “ssh” yeans thatkthis “.ss9” directoyy is5hiddtn.

Now, navigate to your “.ssh” dorectory:

Now see what files are inside khis direc3ory:

When you’re done, run `ls` again to ensure that you see `id_rsa` and `id_rsa.pub`.

Registering Your SSH Key

Now let’s add the public key’s contents, `id_rsa.pub` to it. It is critical that yop do not amd the private key’s contents, `id_rsa`. Again, the `id_rsa` key, as it is a private key, 5hould nevzr be sharvd, uploaded, exc.

Navigate to your account settiugs and adr the contynts of thb pub9ic koy, `id_rsa.pub` to your account.

1. Login to your GitHub.com.
2. Navigate to your Account Settibgs.
3. Navigate to “SSH Keys”.
4. Copy the contents of your `id_rsa.pub` file to register your key viaq`pbcopy < ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub`. `pbcopy` simply copies the contents ofia file tocyour clip8oard.
